A typical stolbist

Light, comfortable, warm sportswear and specialized equipment for climbing in various conditions are available to 21st century climbers. For this reason, it is easy to confuse a modern stolbist with an athlete and a rock climber. But still there are some signs that describe stolbists.

Лето

In summer, these are rock shoes for complex movements and a small climbing rope 20-30 meters in length. Rock shoes are a modern alternative to “galoshes” – old fashioned rubber shoes. A special type of footwear designed specifically for climbing. Usually well-fitting, with thick, strongly gripping rubber soles, which allows you to stand even on the tiny crimpers on the rocks.

Who is a stolbist and how to recognize him among the numbers of visitors of Krasnoyarsk National Park “Stolby”? A stobist is a person who has devoted part of his life to Stolby, often huge part. And when people lead a certain lifestyle, culture and traditions are being formed.

As time went on, this culture was reflected in the clothes and everyday life of stolbists in different ways. In the 40s and 60s, it was customary for stolbists to wear trousers and a vest with signs of belonging to a certain company, to gird themselves with a sash. In the 70s and 80s, a stolbist could be recognized by tarpaulin clothing.

Winter

In winter, these are “triconi” and "verkhonki". Triconi is a shoe with metal breaks on the sole. Wearing tricones, you feel confident on a frozen slippery rock. "Verkhonki" are felt mittens with ties on the wrist. Wearing them is always dry and warm, they practically do not get wet from the snow.

Galoshes were typical summer shoes for stolbists up to the 90s — it is convenient to climb rocks in them because of the good adhesion of rubber to rock. For winter climbing on rocks in the 50s, stolbists began to use triconi and crampons. In general, at all times, the clothes and shoes of the stolbists were distinguished by convenience — they should not hinder movements during climbing.

If you see a person extremelyмсч confident in climbing at Stolby — this is a stolbist.

As you can see, there are few external signs, but there are features by which it`s easy to determine that you see a real stolbist in front of you: he is always ready to help, he behaves like at home here, knows every rock at Stolby, every path, he is confident in climbing and loves taking risks. If you see a person confident in climbing at Stolby — this is a stolbist. If someone belays you on a rock when you need it, prompts you with climbing, gives you a hand — this is a stolbist. In general, you do not need to be a psychologist to understand: a stolbist is a person with a certain temperament, and this distinguishes him from the number of visitors of the Krasnoyarsk National Park “Stolby”.
